Khao PhanSa ~~ Buddhist Lent

The traditional beginning of the rainy season and the beginning of a three month period when monks are supposed to stay in the temples. Thus people visit temples at this time and give monks household items (so monks do not have to leave the Wat for offerings) in order to make merits.
The “Khao Pansa” ceremony itself concerns only the monks, the main purpose of it is for the monks to declare their intention of remaining in the monastery for the duration of Vassa (three months). After making the declaration three times, they chant other services, stating that they wish to live together in harmony and for the good of all. They note that they must not quarrel among themselves, must share with one another, and must not annoy others with wrong behavior or wrong opinions. Afterwards the monks ask forgiveness of each other, first of their leader and thereafter to younger monks. it is evident that this period of retreat is truly a time of purification and edification for them. The custom of spending the rainy season for a period of three months in a temple of fixed abode has been observed by Buddhist monks since the time of the Buddha.
As part of the celebration beautiful and ornate candles of all shapes and sizes and made out of beeswax will be donated to the temples by institutions and individuals alike. Besides serving the practical purpose of lighting the temple and the monks' sleeping area, the candles are also symbolic: they represent not only an illuminated room but also an illuminated mind. Candlelit processions take place all over the country at night. People walk with lotus buds, joss sticks and candle held in prayer-like fashion around the temple three times before setting these offerings down on the temple altars; a beautiful sight to behold indeed.

Eclipse And Culture

Across the centuries, the sun's eclipse has been considered as an evil or a bad omen.

The early cultures saw the sun as a life-giver in its unfailing everyday appearance. So, something that could actually undo the sun was naturally reckoned as a terribly bad event filled with foreboding. Despite the awareness of the true nature of this natural phenomena in contemporary living, many people continue to beat drums, gongs, pots and pans or fire guns into the air or simply hide indoors. The event has been associated with calamities ranging from wars, floods and famines to political upheavals and personal misfortune.

In Thailand, lucky objects are bought to ward off evil omens during the eclipse. Since black is the colour of Rahu (the demon of darkness), devotees in Thailand buy up black chicken, black liquor, black beans, black eggs, black rice and black joss sticks.

In India, during the time of the eclipse, food is neither eaten nor cooked. Many believe that when the rays of the sun don't touch the earth, the number of germs increase. All food cooked before the eclipse is, therefore, thrown away.In India, people immerse themselves in water up to the neck in an act of cleansing. They believe that a simultaneous act of worship would help the sun fight the beast of the demon called the Rahu, that is believed to devour the sun. .Pregnant women refrain from cutting and sewing during the eclipse.Since they believed the child to be born will posses some deformity.

Carved Coconut- Rahu

Carving depicts the Buddhist deity Rahu devouring the moon, which, according to legend, is cause of a lunar eclipse. Very important and powerful Buddhist deity.

The Supreme Patriarch

The Supreme Patriarch or Sangharaja (Thai: พระสังฆราช) is the head of the order
of Buddhist monks in Thailand. The position is formally appointed by the King of Thailand , although the actual selection is made by senior clergymen. It was first established in 1782 at the founding of the Chakri Dynasty by King Rama I.

The incumbent Supreme Patriarch is Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara Suvaddhana Mahathera, who has served in this position since 1989. He is currently aged 93 and suffers from increasingly serious health problems. In 2003, because of questions about the Supreme Patriarch's ability to fulfill his duties, the government of Thailand appointed a special committee to act in his stead. In early 2004, Somdet Kiaw (also known as Buddhacharya) was appointed acting Supreme Patriarch.

By tradition, the Supreme Patriarchate alternates between members of Thailand's two main Theravada Buddhist orders. Because Nyanasamvara Suvaddhana is of the Thammayut Nikaya, this implies that the next Supreme Patriarch will come from the Maha Nikaya.

Wat Mahathat Ayutthaya

Original Buddha face in Ayuthaya style under Bodhi tree at Wat Maha That. Ayuthaya, Thailand
Wat Mahathat Ayutthaya was built in the early period in 1374. The main stupa is Pang shape made of laterite but in the later periods was resored with brick. The construction of Wat Mahathat was begun during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I in 1374 A.D. but was completed during the reign of King Ramesuan (1388-1395 A.D.) When King Songtham (1610-1628 A.D.) was in power the main prang (Khmerstyle tower) collapsed. The restoration work on the prang was probably completed in the reign of King Prasatthong (1630-1655 A.D.) During the restoration the height of the prang was considerably increased.Wat Mahathat was restored once again during the reign of King Borommakot (1732-1758 A.D.) when four porticos of the main prang were added. In 1767 A.D. when Ayutthaya was sacked the wat was burnt and has since then been in ruins.

KYAIKTIYO PAGODA WITH GOLDEN ROCK

"Kyaik-htiyo" means "pagoda upon an hermit's head".

One of the most sacred places in Myanmar, the Kyaik-htiyo-pagoda is situated on the top of the Golden Rock, 1.100 m above Kyaikto in the Mon-state, approximately 60 km E of Bago.
The golden rock is a large boulder of granite, which is supported by an extremely small area of contact with the rock beneath. It seems to be just before falling down, but it has been lying there for hundreds of years already. The pagoda upon it is erected upon one hair of the Lord Buddha.

Kyaiktiyo is a "must" pilgrimage for any Myanmar Buddhist, probably second to Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon only. The beauty is to observe the pilgrims praying, lighting candles and putting thin gold leaves on the boulder, which however is only permitted for males. There are plenty of buildings around for religious purposes but also to cater for the many pilgrims.
Insider info : This is one of the place where Luang Poo Hong wanted very much to go.

Burma Unique Scene

Look carefully, look at the reflection of the rocks in the water... What do you see?
Yes! it's a picture of 2 people in a praying posture.
Isn't it amazing? The power of nature can comes out to! It's breathe taking the day when i saw this picture.

Luang Poo Urt

The name of this monk is Luang Poo Urt ( Erk).. It's in Thai and i hope the translation is not too far from it. He is from Surin and is the fellow disciple of Luang Poo Hong. I hope to get the exact name and details of his temple and put up soon.

The Village temple

Submerged Buddha images at the Ubosot of Wat Praiwan temple in Angthong town are submerged under 1.6 metre of flood water from the Chao Phya River. ( 6/10/06)
Flood water from Noi River in Ayutthaya's Bang Ban district swirl around a Buddha image at Wat Traku School to a depth of 2 metres. ( sept 2006)
I've got the 2 picture showing how bad it was when the flood strike thailand. There is nothing much anybody can do. Some temples in the village area will be the first to feel the hit. There is so little we can do, but still we will try our best to help, if possible.

Newly Built Temple

The name of the temple is - WAT SEELAMYONG located at Surin Province, just beside LP Hong's WAT Petchaburi.
The abbot is the fellow disciple of LP Hong, known as Luang Poo Kee.
It took about one year to complete the building. Painting of the buddha in the temple as well as filling up cements for the first pillar is a very meaningful thing to do. It's not an easy job because in Thailand, most construction work are actually manual labour, there is no machinery used in the building, we just have to stick to the ancient ways. According to the Thais, if you donate money to help build a temple, you will get the merit, but you don't built it. Whereas, by filling up the pillar, going through a series of prayers by the monks, in your life, the merit of building a temple will be tripled ( forgive my brief explanation, i just don't know how to put it in words)

As it is in Thai, i will find out the actual address and post it.

The Legend of Pra Rahu

Pra Rahu (or Pra Rahoo) is the famous auspicious amulet of Srisathong Temple. Pra Rahu is a mythological monster who is supposed to cause eclipses by taking the moon or the sun in his mouth. He is a kind giant in Thai myth. The legend is that Pra Rahu was an immortal giant because he drank some holy nectar. The temple created Pra Rahu amulet not only – taking the moon in his mouth – but also taking the sun in his mouth.

The legend of creation of Pra Rahu is that Pra Rahu was created by the two hermits. One of them was penance in the cave on Nantakhate Mountain. Both of them created magical drawing and magic words in order to sanctify Pra Rahu amulet. One hermit created magical drawing and magic words of Suriyabuppa (eclipse of the sun period) to sanctify Pra Rahu which taking the sun in his mouth. The other hermit created magical drawing and magic words of Chandrabuppa (eclipse of the moon period) to sanctify Pra Rahu which taking the moon in his mouth. The two hermits made those things because they had foresight to know that humans will face with danger and grieves in the future. The auspicious amulet, Pra Rahu, could help people free from those ones.

To sanctify Pra Rahu amulet, it must be made 8 periods for being holy and effective.
Pra Rahu amulets are made of one eyed coconut shells which are rarely found out. In general, the coconut shell has got three holes on the top, one of them is a hole for sprout and the other two are it’s eyes. But the one-eyed coconut shell has got one hole for sprout and has got an only eye. This special kind of coconut shell is considered as the mighty amulet object by itself. Although it is not sanctified, it still has supernatural power. The one-eyed coconut shell has many magic qualifications as follow:

  1. It can used as a bowl to measure rice for cooking. If you run a business, you will get more possessions. If you are a farmer, you will get good farm crops. And if you are an official, you will get the highest rank of all.

  2. It can be used as amulet because it has got holy power by itself. If it is sanctified, it will have more supernatural power.

  3. It is used to prevent you from the mischief, sorcery and evil spirits.

  4. If you have one and you always pay homage to it, you will obtain a lot of properties and money will come in continuously.

  5. The ancient quack used it as a tool to cut the corneal opacity.

Another Rahu's Story

The following story was contributed by one of Rahu's follower.

Rahu - Also known as a Daitya , a humanoid monster with a Dragon head and tail. Rahu was a tricky creature who was present during the churning of the Ocean of Milk in Indian mythology. Rahu was as cunning as the demons. He was associated with. And moment after the immortality-granting amrita was produced, he disguised himself as a God and drank his share. The ever-observant sun and moon saw the trickery and quickly warned Vishnu. As punishment, Rahu's head was severed with the deft throw of a discus.

However by the time he was beheaded the dragon was already immortal and so the halves continued to live independently. When Rahu's head was thrown up into the stars, the revengeful dragon pursued the sun and moon for turning him in. The angry moon chased and devoured Rahu every month when the moon is full. But as revengeful Rahu sometimes ate the sun, which was believed to cause the solar eclipse.

As there are many different version of mythology, I'll be very much appreciated if anybody is willing to contribute to me and give me comment. Once again, Thank you for the support.

Story of LP HONG - Chinese Version

Enlarged picture of LP Hong

Jatukam

Seems like not only all of Thailand is in the grip of Jatukam fever, but nowhere else is it so all-consuming as in this southern Thai city, where it all began. Here it seems like every other citizen is wearing one of the amulets. The Jatukam craze has become a huge bonanza for Nakhon Si Thammarat and the Buddhist temples that give the medals their blessing. Of the city’s 560 temples, 200 produce the amulets, and more are planning to do so. There’s this fever is Singapore too. In our temple, there is a few samples from Thailand too ( I’ll put the photo in rear soon) This probes me to find out more about this amulet.

What is Jatukam? It is actually two people, Jatukam Rammathep. By some accounts, they were princes in the Srivijay Kingdom of which Nahkon Si Thammarat was the center.
Another theory is that the names are a corruption of Khuttugama and Ramadeva two Hindu guardians, that can be seen alongside the stairway leading into the inner sanctum of the Great Stupa of the Wat Pra Mahathat, which is said to be the most important and historic Buddhist temple in southern Thailand.

The first batch of Jatukam amulets was introduced with little fanfare in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat 20 years ago. Now, the amulets bearing the image of this once-obscure deity have become very popular and their prices are skyrocketing.
Jatukam amulets are gaining a huge following based on claims of magical powers and the good fortune they can bring to their owners.

Most Jatukam enthusiasts associate the amulet with Police Major General Phantarak Rajadej, a highly respected and honest police officer in Nakhon Si Thammarat who was reputed to possess knowledge of the occult. He died last September at the age of 103. He was said to have magical powers & instrumental in building the holy site called City Pillar, now a center of the Trade.
Merit-making through donations to temples is widely practised by Thai Buddhists, but not many people attach as much importance to the study of the Buddha's teachings.

Amulet collecting is something that many people rely on for peace of mind, and Buddhists who collect amulets should be allowed to pursue their beliefs and preferences, within reason.

Magical Drawing of Chandra-Buppa (Moon)

  1. Black and Gold
  2. Black and White.

We can fold it and place in our bags or wallet. We can also framed it up and hang it in our office or home. Rahu will protect us from all the bad things and bring us luck.

There is another verion with the image of LP Noi and the cloth is in Orange. It's call the Magical Drawing of Suriya-Buppa (Sun). Currently it's out of stock, hence i couldn't provide the picture of it. Will put up once i get it.

All talisman were from Wat Sisathong and were blessed by Monks.

The Queen of Nagas

[ Queen of Nagas seized by American Army at Mekhong River, Laos Military Base on Jun 27, 1973 with the length of 7.80 metres.]
Rumours said that all the man in the picture died one by one after the picture was taken. Another version of the story was the photo was taken on Sep 19 1996 at the Naval Special Warfare Center, Coronado California. The hugh fish was found lying on the sand at 23ft in length 4ft in circumference by the Navy SEAL Cadets. They carry the fish back to the Naval Amphibious Base and contacted a scientist from the university and identified the fish as an OAR FISH.
This fish inhabit the depths of warm tropical water around the world. The fish are rare and not much is known of their habits. It normally stay down at extreme depths of 700ft or greater. In reality, the fish's head was about to come off, but the photo we saw have been touched up.
The Naga, an underwater creature from Hindu and Buddhist mythology is superior to humans and is keeper of the life giving energy that is inherent in fresh water. Ancient belief that the King of nagas reigns in an underwater Kingdom called Muang Badan and it was believed to exist deep beneath the Mekhong River, with its capital city lying below Nong Khai Province.
Nong Khai is famous of the annual fireball displays which occur on the full moon night of the 11th Month of the lunar year. It's called the "Bung Fai Phya nak"or the Naga Fireball. This seemingly natural phenomenon has been ascribed to the Naga King paying tribute to the Lord Buddha in commemoration of the end of Buddha lent.
Well, we have seen various version of the story, we are in no way attempting to disprove the existence of the Naga or challenge the authenticity of the Bung Fai Phya Nak, no doubt, the picture was indeed an eye opener.

pictures of Rahu

Takruts

The pictures show 3 different kinds of tangka, well there are more designs and shapes by different monks.

The first one was made by gold, silver and copper sheets rolled together inscribed on it with sharp objects like needles. Its then rolled into a stick to be carried around as a keychain, hung in the pocket or worn around the waist.

The second one which we can see comes in a tube form with gold leaf, i cannot remember the name of the monk who gave it to me. Will find the picture and post it up.

The third was made by LP Hong. He rolled up 3 pieces of gold ( real gold including the casing) and in the rolled sheet lays his hair, nail and robe. The 3 piece version is for protection and good luck. If you are doing business, then you should get the 5 piece version becos that will bring you luck in your business.

Blessed Item from the monk

These item shown were part of the items we received from monk who came to our house for blessing. It's always good if we have the oportunity to invite Monks over to our house for breakfast or lunch, if not at least invite them to bless our house. Usually what they will do is walk around the house, including all rooms, kitchen, washroom. They will sprinkle holy water and chant prayer, to keep away all bad "spirit" or energy away from our house. They will also write some prayers on our door and altar. Then all the family members will be gather around to receive blessing from the monk.

People might wonder or worried that they have to pay alot of money to invite the monk to their house or office, but no worries, any forms of donation or token given to the monks is voluntary.

The one on top was the 1st t-shirt I've got from Wat Sisathong, Thailand.
The back of the thai version T-shirt. Hmm.. personally i like this T-shirt very much, it's the one and only piece we've got from thailand.

If you happen to go to Bangkok and visit the Wat Sisathong, you can purchase the T-shirt from the temple.

Some friends said they have seen other colours of t-shirt in Wat Sisathong.. i guess black is the best!

Most Venerable Monk - LP Hong

Venerable Luang Poo Hong is one of the top Guru monks of the present era, although he is now 90 over years old. He is well known and popular for his knowledge in both Dharma and Visha ( supernatural arts).
Luang Poo Hong’s knowledge of Visha had come from Cambodia and is widely-proven for its efficaciousness. There have been reports of miracles and beneficial experiences related to Luang Poo Hong and his amulets among the locals of Surin Province, like protection from bullets and knives.
It was said that unusual phenomena like lightning and thunderstorms have also occurred during consecration ceremonies held by Luang Poo Hong in the past. What is most amazing is that not a single candle or incense stick was extinguished during the ceremonies, despite heavy thunderstorm.
Devas and holy beings have also been reportedly sighted at the ceremonies. Such can be seen efficaciousness of the power and Dhamma practice of Luang Poo Hong.
Luang Poo Hong is famed for making amulets with miraculous efficacy and in particular his Guman and Palad Khiks.
Being the top Monk LP Hong have always been very cheerful and received us with warm welcome and that's the reason why we never failed to visit him when we go to Thailand.

Traditional Thai Temple

A Thai temple is composed of several buildings, which are described in the following pages.

  • the "WIHARN" (วิหาร)
  • the "BOT" (โบสถ์)
  • the pavilion ("SALA" - ศาลา)
  • the gong tower ("HO RAKANG" - หอระฆัง)
  • the entrance and walls
  • the pagoda ("CHEDI" - เจดีย์)
  • the temple compound
  • the banian tree ("BO")
  • the monks house ("KUTI" - กุฎิ)
  • the crematorium
  • the library ("HO TRAI" - หอไตร)
  • the Buddhist hell garden ("NAROK" - นรก)

Temple consecration

An inauguration ceremony called "FANG LUUK NIMIT" (ฝังลูกนิมิต) is done to consecrate a temple. Some sacred marker spheres "LUUK NIMIT" (ลูกนิมิต) need to be buried in the temple compound.
The "SIMA" around the temple compound are called big boundary stones ("SIMA JAI" - สีมาใหญ่). The "SIMA" around the "UBOSOT" are called small boundary stones ("SIMA LEK" - สีมาเล็ก).
The main Buddhist religious ceremonies (daily prayers, ordination of new monks) are held in the main shrine hall called "UBOSOT" (อุโบสถ). The consecration of an "UBOSOT" involves burying nine boundary stones. Then there is a custom of placing boundary stones ("SIMA" - สีมา) over the spheres.
Before the inauguration ceremony, a feast happens in the temple and lasts one week. Many white threads adorn the "UBOSOT".
When a Buddhist ceremony happens in a Thai temple all the monks must be in the area limited by the boundary stones. That's why for big temples with many monks, the boundary stones are around the "UBOSOT" (visitor monks don't have to participate to ceremonies) and for smaller temples the bounding stones are around the temple compound.
Some Thai ladies clean and prepare the compound around the "UBOSOT". The mass ordination will happen there on the first day of the temple consecration.
As the temple consecration is a ceremony for a new opening of the "UBOSOT", the main Buddha statue is covered by a white cloth. It simulates that it is a new Buddha statue also. The white cloth will be removed at the end of the celebrations. All the white threads are starting from the main Buddha image.
A "LUUK NIMIT" (ลูกนิมิต) or sacred marker sphere is waiting to be buried at the inauguration ceremony.
Nine stone spheres demarcate the sacred space around the "UBOSOT": one at the centre, four at the corners and four at the cardinal points.
This billboard display includes the place, date and the program timetable. First day is "BUAT CHEE PHRAM" (บวชชีพราหมณ์), a huge ordination ceremony during one night.
Other days include free "MOLAM" orchestra performances, Thai boxing, outdoor cinema.
Huge billboards are displayed in the area to advertise the forthcoming temple consecration. It includes the place, date and the program timetable.
This billboard display includes the place, date and the program timetable. First day is "BUAT CHEE PHRAM" (บวชชีพราหมณ์), a huge ordination ceremony during one night. Some temples just organize this religious ceremony and no orchestra performances.
A car procession is getting through the town centre to advertise the forthcoming temple consecration through big speakers and music. Some cars carry Buddha statues. People can give donations to support the temple consecration.
With such huge speakers and loud "MOLAM" music, all the city is aware of the forthcoming temple consecration.
In a Thai temple, the "BOT" (โบสถ์) is the finest building where monks are assembled for religious rites such as morning and evening prayers, ordination. It is the most sacred part of the temple.
For the installation of a "CHO FA" on a temple roof, there is a specific Buddhist ceremony. This ceremony is called "YOK CHO FA" (พิธียกช่อฟ้า). On that day, Thai people come to the temple to make money donations. Some families bring a money tree.
Roof of "BOT" (โบสถ์) is often made of red tiles. The number of stack of roofs are always odd ( 3, 5, 7, 9 ). Odd number are supposed to be lucky. "CHO FA" (ช่อฟ้า) is the elongated and elaborately carved apex on the gable of a Buddhist temple. It is believed to represent the mythical Garuda.
People add colorful ribbons around the "CHO FA" and make a Thai greeting ("WAI" - ไหว้). They bless the carved apex by sprinkling lustral water (NAM MON - น้ำมนต์) on it.
Then Thai people gather in the temple around the monks in order to listen to the Dharma.
Once the Buddhist sermon is over and the temple abbot has hit the gong, the "CHO FA" is brought from the ground to the sky thanks to a pulley mechanism.
Once it reaches the roof, the "CHO FA" is fixed to the gable of the temple. The colorful and sacred ribbons are removed and thrown away. Thai people try to get the falling sacred ribbons.
It is still a long way before this Buddhist temple has a complete consecration. Many Buddhist ceremonies will happen.

Thaksin and Rahu

ThailandAstrologer cautions Thaksin

Forget the corruption scandals. The "God of Darkness" could be the downfall of beleaguered Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a respected astrologer said yesterday. Boonlert Pairintra, a senator and noted fortune teller, said Mercury used to favor Thaksin but has been eclipsed by Rahu -- the God of Darkness -- and Thaksin's words will now bring him more enemies than friends. Jupiter, which once made Thaksin a millionaire, will also bring him trouble, he said. "Rahu is overshadowing Thaksin's stars, which will bring all bad luck to him ... Thaksin will face his downfall anytime during the first half of this year," Boonlert said.

Picture of Temple

These are some of the picture i had for the temple where I used to go, a place which was like my second home before. Sorry for the "rough" work, guess i'm just not a good artist.
I apologise that I can't disclose the name and address of the temple since I'm NOT Allow and do not wished to be mistaken that I have any motive or trying to gain publicity/profit by promoting that temple.
As I always said, Rahu will lead us the way. Now I've been going to Palelai at Simpang Bedok as well as praying at home and I think I've found so much peace.
